Malvian went into the dark, sending two remotes ahead, who disappeared into the oily blackness with beeping sounds. Instead of shining his way with a light, Malvian looked down on his pad, while Klagas illuminated the corridor behind him, followed by the rogue droid. The thing has not dropped the blaster since they have been herded into the cave by this supposed guardian. The remote droids were busy scanning the interior, sending pictures to Malvian’s pad.
“Where to?”, Klagas asked sombrely. Malvian studied the readings. “Amazing! There are numerous corridors and just as many rooms, all though some passages are already collapsed.” Malvian looked past Klagas towards the droid. “Is there anything we are looking for?” Silence.
Then the mechanic voice-mod of the droid cracked through the hall: “An antechamber. It should be bigger than most in this structure.” The droid looked at the facade of the wall next to them. Ancient runes and statues were carved into the stone. “I will know it, if I see it again.” Malvian did not pay much attention, as he was already back to his pad, but Klagas did notice the slip in the droid’s answer: ‘again’.
With Malvian leading, the three went deeper into the ancient structure, until the Slicer stopped. “There!” Malvian pointed to the right.
“The Remotes picked something up?”
“What?”, Klagas asked nervously.
“Maybe what we are looking for.” Both turned around to the droid, who only answered by pointing is blaster-rifle to the right. “You may go first.”
Klagas and Malvian changed looks, before the Slicer went ahead.
When they entered the room, the two remotes were flying about, beeping while scanning the last cracks of the interior. Lighting around the room, Klagas went ahead, while Malvian finally removed his gaze from the digital pictures on the pad. The room was elongated, with something like a walkway in the middle. Old braziers and statues stood at the sides, watching ever vigilant over the chamber. At the end of the path, a stand stood, with a structure on it. A pyramid, it’s surface pitch black, deeper than the emptiness of space itself. As light touched the stone, the smoothness of the material became clear, with the light only reflecting in an odd and eldritch way. So dark, yet reflecting light, all though in its darkest and most primal form.
Klagas had to swallow hard, as his stomach rebelled. He did not understand why, but the pyramid just awoke an ancient fear in him.
“By the stars…”, Malvian gasped, slowly walking toward the structure.
“Is this it?”, Klagas asked, as he turned around to the droid. The machine looked around the room as well, almost looking as awe stroke as the two scrappers. If a droid could even feel such emotions.
“Indeed.”, the voice-box cracked. “The master while be overcome with joy!” The droid looked forwards, past Klagas. “Maybe, you should keep your friend in check.”
As Klagas turned around, Malvian already started to climb the stand, walking towards the pyramid. “Hey!”, Klagas shouted at his friend. “Come back down!”
Malvian did not answered. Mesmerized by the monolithic pyramid, he stumbled towards it, ever so closer. “Malvian!”
“It is fine.”, he assured Klagas, not turning around. “I’m just checking.”
“Klagas!” As the slicer touched the flat surface of the pyramid, an odd silence filled the room. Klagas started to walk towards Malvian, as a deep red light started to emanate from the pyramid. As the glow grew, Malvian started to scream ever so louder, until it turned into a tortured screech. His body collapsed to the ground, as his hand was unable to leave its spot on the structure. As Klagas approached his friend, red and blue lighting-storms came flowing out of the tip of the pyramid. Klagas almost reached Malvian, as a horrible pain struck his back, followed by an almost unbearable sound. He collapsed, gasping for air desperately.
As Malvian’s body turned to dust, the lighting disappeared, leaving the pyramid with a rhythmic, red glow. Like a living, dark heart. Unable to move, the droid came into his view, inspecting the dead and the pyramid. He wanted to scream, but his air was almost out of his entire system. With a blurry vision, he looked at the droid, which turned around toward him.
“Assessment: Truly a successful mission. The master will be proud of my flawless accomplishment, as always.”
The machine pointed it’s blaster at the dying Klagas.
“Mocking: Your pre-payment has been invalid, meat bag. Just to assure you.”
A red light spread out of the weapon, before Klagas collapsed onto the floor.
“Truly, a success.”
